But here the director's cut pays even bigger dividends. Part Two is a significant step up from its pruned PG-13 iteration and gives “Rebel Moon” the feeling of completion (sort of – more on that in a second) that its shorter form was missing.

Well, if you were a fan of the first Rebel Moon, you'll probably find Part 2 to be a more polished experience. The action is top-notch, and there's definitely a sense of progression in terms of the overall feel of the film.

After the critical bomb in the first part of Rebel Moon, the sequel followed the same fate. Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver was able to claim only a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score, which was mediocre for a movie of that magnitude. The franchise has lost the gravity of the essence to make it huge with more installments.

As the final battle ensues, the movie dedicates its entire running time to creating action sequences and not much else. Rotten score. Rebel Moon Part Two is infinitely more watchable than Part One thanks to its impressive third act battle, but there's still not much else to latch onto.

Therefore, we're not looking at a start to production anytime imminently, probably not until late 2025 at the earliest. With that in mind, it seems wildly unlikely that we'll see the next Rebel Moon film any time before 2026 even if it is confirmed soon, possibly even later.

The director's cuts had ample space to explore different aspects of the movie which is seemingly the “true vision” of the director while creating the space opera. Unlike the original PG-13 ratings, the new versions of the film enhance the experience to another level.

Rebel Moon is overstuffed and underdeveloped. There's too many characters and in its current state there's not enough time to give them meaningful depth so it feels rushed despite clocking in at over 2 hours.

The scale is interesting despite the derivative ideas and, with some better choreographed action, Rebel Moon could take its solid soundtrack and create a space opera less reliant on forcing the viewer to watch faux flair and get their hearts pounding with some epic science fiction.

The Big Picture

Zack Snyder's creative control means multiple, significant director's cuts for his Netflix sci-fi universe. The R-rated versions of Rebel Moon have a different tone, length, and event order compared to the PG-13 versions.

For many, the Director's Cut is the most complete way to play Ghost of Tsushima and will have fans enthralled by the game's attention to detail and world-building.

Some material was either removed or replaced (all of the deleted scenes and trims are available as part of the DVD's supplementary material). In total, about 10% of the film is different from the theatrical cut, but the changes, while seemingly slight, result in a significantly improved motion picture.

And at that price for the amount of content it offers, simply with just the Iki Island DLC, it's totally worth getting the upgrade. This is especially true if you're making the switch from PS4 to PS5 since the Director's Cut upgrade also bundles the native PS5 version of the game.
